Hello sa tanan!
I have a quick experience for you all. First, to answer your question mom; my shoes are never dry... It has been a hard few weeks because it has rained CONSTANTLY. And because it has been constant, there has been no sun! This means I can't dry out my shoes very well... It also means that if I do my laundry, it won't dry too well... It's a struggle to put on wet shoes everyday and to come home soaking. We had one day, Saturday, where there was no rain, so I took a ton of stuff outside to dry it off! The whole day I was just praying that it wouldn't rain because I had set my pillow out. I was very lucky - It didn't rain. In my last four weeks here, I have gone through about four umbrellas... So, those of you who are good at math, that averages to one umbrella per week. The first was my little cute umbrella from America. That little guy lasted a while, almost a whole year of my mission. I always looked rather odd under such a tiny umbrella, but it was very compact, rather tactical, if you will. I ceremoniously buried it in the garbage can. Another one broke within a week and then the other was lost, so I had to replace it again. But ANYWAY, I have an experience for you, now that I've finished relating my umbrella history to you all.
On Thursday, you guessed it; it was raining. A lot. The day before, it only rained for about 15 minutes and it was really light. I had carried my umbrella the entire day and never used it. The next day, however, I left it at our apartment accidentally... That was probably one of the worst days to leave an umbrella. We were walking down a hill from one of our appointments when it just started raining super hard out of nowhere, so we were like, "run for it!!" We took cover in a nearby tsanggi (chungey is how it would look in English) and watched the rain. Normally, had I had an umbrella, we would have just kept going, because I'm hardcore. Just kidding. But this time, because I had been sick for a while already, I thought, "You know, it probably is NOT a good idea to just tough it out and tromp around in the rain without an umbrella when I am sick..." That's like dunking a paper cut in lemon juice; it doesn't help the problem at all, just makes it worse. So we waited a good 30 minutes or so to see if it cleared up. Nope. So we just went for it. Two grown men under a cute blue umbrella. (we bought matching umbrellas, by the way. So that's cute.) For anyone who has ever tried to walk side-by-side under and umbrella before... You'll understand what I am about to explain. As I was trying to huddle under his umbrella for the LONG walk ahead, I started to notice how miserable the next mile or so more would be... As my head was repeatedly jabbed by the small little pointy things on the side of the umbrella, I began to think, "Why is he moving the umbrella ALL over the place??? Hold still!" Eventually I realized something... The umbrella was moving around at the same pace as his steps. It would go up and then come down, up, then down again. The distance it covered seemed so great, I figured he must have been skipping! In reality, however, he was not skipping; he was walking normally. I began to try and align my steps with his, doing that awkward "trip-yourself-slightly-on-purpose-to-match-his-stride" maneuver. It was successful. Gradually, however, we became out of sync and the same problem began to happen again and I had to refocus on his steps to avoid getting stabbed in the face by the umbrella. We were holding conversations some of the way and were even laughing and enjoying it now and then, but whenever I lost focus, we started getting out of sync.
I realized from this experience that our life is the EXACT same. Our Heavenly Father has his own will for us, and whenever we conform, or whenever we are in sync with him, our life is full of happiness. Sometimes, however, even when we are enjoying our life and living in obedience, we forget to stay focused on God's steps, just as I did with Elder Sabio. Heavenly Father is the one holding the umbrella, therefore we must conform to his will if we want to stay dry. Of course, we still have the option to wander out from under the protection of the umbrella, which I happened to do many times, but every time I did so, I just got more and more wet. That wetness, however, did not magically disappear when I got back under the umbrella, I just didn't get any MORE wet. Yes, we have the choice to wander outside the commandments that our Heavenly Father has set for us, but we will only get "wet", or we will only get hurt. That pain doesn't magically go away when we come running back under his umbrella because there is a "drying process" or a repentance process. We are lucky that we even HAVE an umbrella in the first place. If we want to not only stay dry, but to walk COMFORTABLY under his umbrella, it takes constant effort and focus. I know that that's true. I wish I could expound this analogy even further, but I don't have time. I hope you all learned what I learned from this experience
Well, I hope everyone has an AWESOME week. Good luck!
Love,
Elder Welton
